Northern Rowing Council - Junior Commisioner Report 2005

Regrettably we have had no Junior Commissioner in place for most of this year, it has been a difficult position to fill; my thanks to Martin Tyler for attending the September Junior Commission meeting in London on the region's behalf. .

The year has been an eventful one for the juniors of the region, a large number attended GB trials with varying levels of success. The most notable ones being:

World Junior Championships
The region had three members in the bronze medal winning WJ8- Frances Fletcher (Tyne), Vicki Bryant (Chester Ie Street) and Helen Blevins ( Durham ARC). The eight was coached by WCS coach Andy Bird and even managed to train in the region as a crew.

Nathaniel Reilly-O'Donnell and Michael Pallister were part of a four and only narrowly missed the A Final; winning the B final.

Coupe de La Jeunesse
Emma Steel of Durham stroked the WJ 4x to a Gold Medal in the event and was also team captain.

Anglo French Match
Ben Rowe and Alex Leigh of Yarm School were selected in MJ16 2x and won the narrowest of margins.

Junior Inter Regionals
The region again put out a full team and there were numerous excellent performances, it was pleasing to see the composite crews from Tees/QEHS in 4- and Cambois/Chester-le-Street/St Leonards in 4+ doing so well after such a short time training together - something to build on in the future.

J16 Sculling Camp
The region held a skills testing event after Durham Head to qualify our candidates for selection onto the camp. One boy and one girl were selected from the region (Daniel Moore (Durham) and Rebecca Warburton (Tees) And as in previous years the cost for these two were sponsored from the region.

Other Issues
Throughout the year, the following have had our region's input

(l) Whether to include the J14/J15 events in Nat Champs in the future.
(2) Junior Safety - following the Reading tragedy
(3) Junior Commissioner- serious thought about how to fill this position, which has wide ranging duties and has been the most difficult position to fill.
The way forward seems to be to link this in with the regional sub-divisions and have one junior rep in each area with all three then sharing the duties and meetings, in effect the position would become a team position rather than an individual.
