Long Distance Sculling Series

Resources required for the Timing System

The timing system is pretty straightforward. At the start and finish, the real time that crews cross the line is recorded and these are simply subtracted and then ranked to provide the result. The times are recorded on a laptop and by hand as a back up. The start order is loaded into the laptop prior to the race. Therefore a team is needed at the start and the finish to operate the laptop and to record the times.

The minimum requirement is:

Start
Laptop operator
Stopwatch operator
Sequence recorder
Starter

Finish
Laptop operator
Stopwatch operator
Sequence recorder
Spotter

What is involved?
Laptop operator – turning on the laptop, following on screen instructions and clicking numbered boxes as each crew crosses the line, following instructions that records the data onto a USB stick (i.e. pretty rudimentary knowledge)
Stopwatch operator – pressing the lap button as each crew crosses the line
Sequence recorder – writing down the crew number as each crew crosses the line. At the start this is the start order, at the finish it is a bit more random
Starter – Shouting “go” as each crew approaches the start line
Spotter – to assist the finish people by warning them which crews are approaching the finish line
