The fifth round of the 2016 Explore Series was a splash-and-dash sculling event at
Tynemouth on 3 July. The weather looked benign, but once out of the shelter of the
headland there was quite a SW breeze and choppy water. Whilst crews coped, to avoid
boats being swept in to the pier, the course was progressively shortened and the
finish moved towards the beach as the tide came in.
Of the women’s crews The Gulls of Tynemouth came out tops with three wins, but only
because a dead-heat robbed both Darc Green and Hextraordinary of half a point each,
giving them both 2½ wins! Of the open crews, Fog on the Tyne seemed best able to
handle the tricky conditions (just), and had four wins, though the last race with
Tynemouth Sharks was very close run.
Thanks to Tynemouth RC for their usual great hospitality and the weather and also
to Tees RC for bringing up their boats. Special mention to starter, Carol, and her
driver and photographer, Big Al, and his driver and anyone else who sat out in the
launches for hours!
